Media and Government Relations Manager

Western Sydney Airport is currently building a high performing Corporate Affairs team to build the profile of the airport and support the ongoing development of a customer focussed airport business. As a member of the Corporate Affairs team, the Media and Government Relations Manager is responsible for delivering the media and government relations strategy for Western Sydney Airport, which includes the developing stakeholder-specific engagement strategies for media and representatives from governments at the federal, state and local levels.

Reporting to the General Manager, Media and Government Relations, you ultimately have responsibility for providing support in developing and delivering the media and government relations strategy, with a focus on anticipating and proactively managing reputational issues.

Key responsibilities and accountabilities include:

  1. Building WSA’s reputation and profile – provide strategic advice and services to support the General Manager – Media and Government Relations, WSA Executive and employees, to build the organisation’s reputation with key stakeholders including the media, government, community, industry and business
  2. Developing communication materials - Develop innovative and engaging communication materials, assets and solutions including speeches, op eds, media releases, issues notes, social media content and presentations to effectively reach new and existing audiences.
  3. Building and developing relationships:
    1. Work collaboratively with key government stakeholders including the Office of the Minister for Cities, Urban Infrastructure and Population and the Office of the Minister for Finance to ensure they are prepared for all parliamentary requirements with respect to the project, including assisting with the preparation of materials to support DIRD with QONs, PQs, Senate Estimate notes and QT briefs
    2. Work collaboratively to ensure the communication approach is consistent and WSA is capitalising on opportunities and mitigating risks.
    3. Establish strong working relationships with senior leaders and employees across WSA and work collaboratively with internal business units to develop and deliver strategic programs and identify media opportunities.
    4. Build and maintain positive, cooperative and productive relationships with WSA’s client (Federal Government), relevant NSW Government parties, key industry partners and other stakeholders.
  4. Evaluating and reporting – use media evaluation tools to demonstrate a return on investment, including stakeholder attitudes and perceptions. Provide reports, reflecting key issues, opportunities performance and progress towards objectives.
  5. Building and managing the profile of the organisation - including the CEO and Executive team, through the provision of key speaking, government engagement and media opportunities.

To be successful in this role, you will have demonstrated experience working with Government departments, ministerial offices and staffers to identify media opportunities and implement risk management strategies as well as a high-level ability to inform, influence and negotiate with audiences at a senior level.

Proven experience working directly with and influencing journalists and producers, superior written and verbals skills as well as demonstrated experience in developing and delivering protocols, values and guidelines to manage media and government stakeholders are key skills required for this position.

Relevant tertiary qualification and/or equivalent media and government experience, in particular the development and implementation of superior media and government relations strategies in the infrastructure and/or aviation industries is mandatory.
